Our Commitment

Our Commitment to Community

We believe in making a meaningful impact in the community in which we live, work and play. From free public events to corporate giving, we embrace our role of creating connections in our community.

For 22 years Canada Place has been the epi-centre for Canada Day celebrations on the West Coast. An all day free street festival, evening parade, and two-barge fireworks show bring people together every July 1 to share in our Canadian spirit.

In 2010, Canada Place will embark on a national community outreach program, bringing a taste of Canada and of Canada Place to communities across the country. We’re working to build strong relationships, deep patriotism and a greater understanding and appreciation for our nation. Canada Place is honoured to partner with Strathcona Community Centre’s Food Security for Children program through events such as Christmas at Canada Place and throughout the year. This crucial program ensures children on Vancouver’s downtown eastside, one of Canada’s lowest income neighbourhoods, have access to healthy snacks and meals every day of the year. Since 2004, Canada Place Corporation has raised over $125,000 for this special program. For more information about Strathcona, click here.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

As a world class facility, Canada Place believes in operating in a sustainable manner and to minimize our environmental footprint.

Canada Place and our tenants have earned the Go Green designation from the Building Owners and Managers Association of British Columbia (BOMA), a designation given to commercial buildings with a proven commitment to environmentally-responsible practices.

A cool fact about Canada Place is that our central plant utilizes chilled sea water to generate energy-efficient air conditioning for the facility. This innovative practice capitalizes on our waterfront location and allows us to operate our central plant in a highly sustainable manner.

Additionally, Canada Place practices BC Hydro Power Smart initiatives such as the Green Power Certificate program to ensure green electricity enters our transmission grid.

In 2009, the Port Metro Vancouver Cruise Ship Terminal at Canada Place was the first port in Canada to implement shore power for cruise ships. This highly effective practice reduces marine diesel air emissions by enabling ships to shut down their engines and connect to BC Hydro’s electrical grid in order to access power while docked.

The Vancouver Convention Centre at Canada Place has been designated a Powersmart Convention Centre by BC Hydro, and in 2008 won the Environmentally Responsible Tourism Award from BC Tourism for their facility-wide programs which address areas such as energy efficiency and conservation.
